Choosing the right finish - a 60-second guide

Colour Selection Explained

The sheen level you choose affects how a room looks, feels, and performs. Here's our expert guide to choosing the right finish for every surface in your home.

High reflectivity

Gloss Finish

Gloss finish is highly reflective, hard-wearing finish that’s easy to wipe clean. It’s ideal for busy family homes. Gloss is more durable than lower-sheen alternatives. It can highlight minor surface imperfections, so thorough preparation important.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Semi-gloss paint has a slightly glossy appearance but isn't as reflective as gloss paints. It has a satin sheen that is suitable for all interior surfaces, including walls, doors, trims and cupboards. Also great for high-traffic areas like kitchens and lounge rooms.

Low reflectivity

Low Sheen Finish

Low sheen paint forms a velvety finish that is super hard-wearing and easy to keep clean. It can also hide surface imperfections better than gloss paints. Suitable for almost all interior surfaces and great for areas where frequent cleaning is necessary.

Matt Finish

Matt paint has low light reflection which gives it a stylish, sophisticated finish. The lower light reflection also helps hide surface imperfections, which can be helpful in family homes. Perfect for softening the effect of glare along hallways or in rooms with large windows.

What we recommend for different North Shore homes.

Coastal Homes

Homes near the coast usually receive brighter, more reflective light, which can push cool tones and make some whites feel too stark. For these homes, we often recommend softer coastal palettes, more controlled neutrals, and exterior colours that sit well in strong light rather than fighting against it.

Sheltered & Tree-Lined Homes

Homes in more sheltered streets or greener areas tend to receive filtered light, which can mute cooler colours and flatter warmer tones. In these spaces, we usually recommend colours with enough warmth and clarity to avoid the room or exterior feeling flat or muddy.

Heritage Villas & Bungalows

Character homes usually benefit from palettes that respect their era and detailing. We often recommend period-aware body colours, crisp trim relationships, and accents that feel appropriate to the home rather than trying to force a modern scheme onto traditional architecture.

Modern & Contemporary Homes

Modern homes usually suit cleaner palettes, stronger tonal relationships, and more disciplined colour use. Monochromatic schemes, restrained neutrals, charcoals, off-whites, and carefully chosen accents tend to work well across contemporary forms and open-plan layouts.

Pre-Sale Homes

If the goal is buyer appeal, colour choices need to feel current, broad, and easy to live with. We usually recommend clean neutrals and straightforward palettes that photograph well, brighten spaces, and help the property feel maintained and ready for the market.

Renovations, Extensions & New Builds

Renovations and extensions often need colour bridging between old and new areas, while new builds need a full palette created from scratch. We help with both, whether that means colour matching existing finishes or developing a coordinated scheme from the first decision through to the finished painted home.

Our Process

Colour Consultation Step by Step

Refined over 17 years and thousands of completed interiors. Consistent quality, minimal disruption.

01

Understanding Your Colour Vision

We assess wall and ceiling conditions, discuss colours, identify prep challenges, and quote within 48 hours, fully itemised, no hidden fees.

02

Assessing Your Home’s Light & Style

Then we assess the architecture, orientation, room proportions, window direction, natural light, and the character of the property so the colour advice is based on your actual space rather than generic chart recommendations.

03

Developing Your Colour Scheme

For interiors, that means colour flow from room to room; for exteriors, it means selecting body, trim, and accent colours that sit together properly.

04

Testpot Sampling

We test colours in the real environment, not just on paper. Large swatches are applied to the actual walls or cladding so you can see how the colour behaves in morning light, midday light, and evening light before making a final call.

05

Final Colour Confirmation

After you have had time to live with the samples, we review them with you and refine the scheme if needed. Paint is only ordered once the colours are confirmed and you are comfortable moving ahead.

06

Painting With Confidence

Once the colours are approved, the painting stage becomes much simpler. You are no longer guessing or hoping the colour will work, because you have already seen it properly in your own home before the full job begins.
